Auckland Live will mark NZ Music Month with a month-long programme of concerts, pop-up performances and free public events across central Auckland in May.
Running from May 1 to 31, the programme will activate venues and public spaces including Auckland Town Hall, The Civic, Te Komititanga and Karanga Plaza.
Supported by Auckland Council, the initiative is aimed at boosting city-centre activity while showcasing New Zealand music.
City vibrancy and visitor spend
Auckland Live director Daniel Clarke says the programme supports local artists while drawing people into the CBD.
“Auckland Live’s NZ Music Month programme supports local artists, brings people into the city centre, and makes live music more accessible for Aucklanders.
“It also reinforces Auckland’s place as a UNESCO City of Music, creating shared experiences that bring people together through waiata, performance and public space.”
Daniel says concerts and free events will give Aucklanders and visitors more reasons to spend time in the city centre.
Major concerts headline month
Headline ticketed shows include Fat Freddy’s Drop at Auckland Town Hall from May 15 to 17 and Marlon Williams at The Civic on May 21 and 22.
The Aotearoa Music Awards will also be held at The Civic on May 28.
Morning People will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a morning rave at Auckland Town Hall on May 30, featuring Tiki Taane in a DJ set.
Free public activations
Free city-centre events include the Vospertron Tron Mob roaming silent disco and Mighty, a series of one-song acoustic performances staged inside a converted shipping container.
Artists scheduled for Mighty include Geneva AM, Jon Toogood, Don McGlashan and The Beths member Liz Stokes.
The programme aligns with Auckland Council’s Sounds of Tāmaki Makaurau campaign, which promotes community-based music events across the region.
