Auckland Airport has scheduled more than 207,000 additional international seats for the 2025-26 summer season, lifting total international capacity to about 5.8 million seats.
According to figures cited by NZRAC from Auckland Airport reporting, the gateway now offers direct links to 43 international destinations.
The increase in airline capacity is expected to support demand for ground transport, particularly among families, sports teams and organised groups arriving through New Zealand’s busiest airport.
Group travel drives van demand
NZRAC says larger-capacity vehicles are increasingly attractive for visitors travelling in groups, allowing costs to be shared while reducing the need for multiple rentals.
The company says one passenger van can lower per-person transport costs and simplify logistics such as parking, fuel use and convoy driving.
Groups arriving in Auckland often use larger vehicles for airport transfers before continuing to regional destinations around the North Island.
Airport collections important
NZRAC says airport-adjacent pick-up points are particularly valuable for larger parties, where coordinating several separate vehicle collections can create delays.
According to Stats NZ figures cited by NZRAC, overseas visitor arrivals to New Zealand totalled 3.51 million in 2025.
The company says a share of those visitors travel in family or organised groups requiring more capacity than standard five-seat vehicles.
Popular onward routes from Auckland include the Bay of Islands, Rotorua and Taupō.
Fleet capacity responds
NZRAC says providers such as NZRAC maintain dedicated van fleets at their Auckland Airport branch, supported by shuttle transfers from both terminals.
The company says continued growth in airline capacity, expanding source markets and the practicality of consolidated group transport are supporting demand for larger rental vehicles at Auckland Airport.
