Taranaki is set to host an international surfing event over King’s Birthday Weekend, with the World Surf League Longboard Tour Qualifying Series expected to draw competitors and visitors to the region during the off-peak season.
The Taranaki Longboard Classic at Fitzroy Beach follows a WSL Championship Tour stop in Raglan the week prior, keeping international attention on New Zealand’s west coast.
Global spotlight on west coast
As the second and final stop of the 2026 Australia/Oceania Regional Longboard Qualifying Series, the event carries World Tour qualification stakes, attracting elite surfers and support crews.
Surfing Taranaki chief executive Craig Williamson says the competition offers a rare chance to see top-level longboarding locally.
“We’re excited to be hosting the WSL Taranaki Longboard Classic… and give people the chance to watch some of the best in the world compete right here,” Craig says.
Off-peak economic impact
Venture Taranaki says the event supports regional tourism during a quieter period.
General manager destination Janet Reynolds says hosting the competition reinforces Taranaki’s position as a year-round destination.
“It delivers real economic impact, bringing competitors, support crew, media attention, and international profile that supports our local businesses and visitor economy,” Janet says.
Regional positioning
The event highlights Taranaki’s established surf offering, with consistent swells along Surf Highway 45 and a strong local surf culture.
It also provides a platform for New Zealand athletes, with several surfers competing for qualification to the 2026/2027 WSL Longboard World Tour.
Event experience
Alongside competition, the event will include on-site activations and hospitality offerings for spectators over the weekend.
WSL Longboard Tour director Will Hayden-Smith says the region provides an ideal setting.
“It’s a region with incredible natural beauty and a strong surf culture… with World Tour qualification on the line, we’re expecting a high level of performance,” he says.
