After 10 years in the position, Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Mike Theelen has announced his departure from the organisation in February 2026.
After completing two full five-year terms in the role, Mike has chosen not to seek reappointment instead taking the opportunity to take time out to be with family both locally and overseas.
During his tenure, Mike has overseen a time of significant change in the district and shaped an organisation that is adapting to and embracing those challenges. In latter years, government reform has shaped a lot of the Council’s work as has responding to the sustained pressures of growth. That period has seen significant investment in social and community facilities and infrastructure such as three waters and roading, with Mike advocating for the district regionally and nationally.
Mayor Glyn Lewers says Mike would be deeply missed by many across the organisation and his experience would be a significant loss.
“Mike has led this organisation through challenging times across his two five-year terms. His deep knowledge, strong networks, and the respect he has earned over the years have helped achieve outcomes we can all be proud of — most recently, securing the organisation’s position as one of the first to partner with Central Government in a regional deal.
“I am confident that the strong foundation Mike has laid will serve the next chief executive well and provide a solid platform for future success,” says Mayor Lewers.
The process to appoint a new chief executive is underway and will be led by the incoming Mayor with support from the QLDC people and capability team. News on that appointment will be provided as and when it is available.
