The Government will invest through its Events Boost Fund to support the India-New Zealand 100 Years of Unity through Sport programme, which will bring a series of Indian national sports teams to New Zealand in November.
Sport and Recreation Minister Mark Mitchell says the programme marks a century of sporting ties between the two countries and will celebrate the relationship through a month of events across New Zealand.
The Indian men’s football team and India’s individual and mixed pairs bowls teams have been confirmed as part of the programme, with several other national teams expected to tour simultaneously. New Zealand Cricket has already announced its schedule for India’s cricket tour.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston says the initiative will help strengthen ties with one of New Zealand’s key visitor markets.
“India and New Zealand share a special relationship, and I’m proud the Government is investing in this cultural and sporting campaign. We look forward to welcoming the teams and fans who will experience the best our country has to offer.”
Upston says the events are expected to deliver economic benefits by attracting international visitors while supporting the Government’s wider programme of major sporting, arts and cultural events.
Funding from the Events Boost Fund will support delivery of the 100 Years of Unity through Sport programme.
