Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre has opened a permanent Quiet Space, expanding its accessibility offering for delegates, exhibitors and visitors attending events at the venue.
The dedicated room provides a low-stimulation environment for people who experience sensory sensitivities or simply need a quiet place to rest during an event.
General manager Ross Steele says the initiative reflects the convention centre’s commitment to creating welcoming and inclusive experiences.
“At Te Pae Christchurch, we believe everyone should be able to participate fully and comfortably in the events hosted at our venue. Creating a dedicated Quiet Space was a natural extension of our commitment to manaakitanga and ensuring every guest feels welcomed, supported and valued.”
The project was developed by Te Pae Christchurch’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee in consultation with Autism New Zealand.
Chief executive Dane Dougan says permanent facilities such as the Quiet Space represent a meaningful step towards greater accessibility.
The room includes calming lighting, soft furnishings, sensory resources and fidget tools, while noise-cancelling headphones and earmuffs are also available for guests.
The Quiet Space complements Te Pae Christchurch’s existing accessibility initiatives, including participation in the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower and Hāpai Access Card programmes.
