Major food and drink events are expected to deliver a welcome boost for hospitality businesses during August, with Restaurant Month in Auckland, Visa Wellington On a Plate and Beervana drawing visitors during one of the sector’s quieter periods.
Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Kristy Phillips says the festivals have become an important driver of winter trade.
“Wellington On a Plate and Restaurant Month were established off the back of the Global Financial Crisis almost two decades ago to encourage people back into restaurants, and the sentiment remains today.
“While some restaurants now offer more elaborate promotions, fundamentally it’s about getting people into restaurants, whether that be to try a new dish at a local favourite or experience a venue that’s completely new and exciting.”
Hospitality New Zealand says Wellington On a Plate and Beervana contributed $10 million to the Wellington economy last year, while Restaurant Month will feature more than 100 restaurants across Auckland with set-price menus, chef collaborations and cultural dining experiences.
Kristy says the events support hospitality businesses while creating vibrancy and encouraging people to explore their cities.
