According to research from Explore Worldwide, New Zealand recorded a 90 per cent year-on-year increase in interest for solo travel, placing it third globally behind Iceland and Oman.
The study also ranked New Zealand ninth overall among the most popular countries for solo travel in 2026.
Solo travel demand rises
Explore says solo travel bookings among its customers increased 33 per cent over the past year, while online interest remains strong.
The company says more than 40,500 monthly searches and 1.9 million TikTok posts tagged #solotravel reflect growing appetite for travellers wanting greater flexibility and independence.
New Zealand appeal highlighted
Explore says New Zealand’s ranking reflects its combination of landscapes, welcoming locals and relatively easy travel routes.
The company grouped New Zealand with Australia as destinations offering strong appeal for independent travellers seeking nature, freedom and self-guided exploration.
For the tourism sector, the trend may offer opportunities for accommodation providers, tour operators and regional destinations targeting flexible travellers outside traditional group itineraries.
Asia leads overall rankings
Japan ranked as the most popular solo travel destination overall, followed by Thailand and India.
Explore senior PR and communications manager Laura Dewar says solo travel is attracting people seeking immersive experiences.
“Solo travel has a huge pull for those looking to travel at their own pace, seeking more flexibility, independence, and immersive experiences.”
Motivations vary
The company’s survey found 48 per cent of respondents were seeking relaxation-focused travel, 47 per cent city exploration and 33 per cent road trips.
