SkyCity is inviting Aucklanders to help design a new large-scale AUCKLAND installation planned for the base of the Sky Tower.
The permanent structure will stand two metres high and more than 10 metres wide, with the company positioning it as a new meeting point and visitor feature in the central city.
SkyCity says the aluminium installation will sit within the SkyCity Auckland precinct, near the New Zealand International Convention Centre.
Public competition launched
Before the sign receives its final finish, the company is asking the public to design up to four of the eight letters in AUCKLAND.
Winning designs will feature on the installation during its launch period, while the remaining letters will be allocated to community partners.
SkyCity general manager of sales and marketing Caroline Ah Chong-Douglas says the project is intended to create something locals can connect with.
“This is about giving Aucklanders something to call their own.
“We wanted to create a landmark that reflects the energy, creativity and diversity of the city – something that resonates with the people who live here, as well as the many visitors who come through Auckland each year.”
Tourism and events potential
SkyCity says the installation is expected to become a gathering point for visitors, event delegates and locals moving through the precinct.
Its location beside Sky Tower and close to the convention centre could make it a high-profile photo stop as Auckland hosts conferences, events and leisure travellers.
“We see this as a continued evolution of the precinct and its role in welcoming the world to Auckland,” Caroline says.
Key dates
Entries are open now and close at 8am on May 8 through the SkyCity website and promotional partner The Breeze Auckland.
The eight winning designs are due to be revealed at an unveiling event under Sky Tower on May 15.
Each selected artist will receive a NZ$250 SkyCity prize pack.
