Solomon Airlines will launch a new direct service between Christchurch and Port Vila, Vanuatu, from Wednesday, July 1, 2026, giving South Island travellers a direct link to the South Pacific.
The twice-weekly service will operate on Thursdays and Sundays, departing Christchurch in the morning and returning from Port Vila on Wednesdays and Saturdays in the afternoon.
Flights will be operated by an Airbus A320-200, with a flying time of around four hours.
The route marks the first time a scheduled commercial service has operated between Christchurch and Vanuatu.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson says the new service is a strong addition for Canterbury and the wider South Island.
“When the temperature drops and the rain jackets come out, it’s the perfect time to have a warm-weather escape on the horizon,” says Justin.
“This direct service to Port Vila is a great opportunity for South Islanders to enjoy an easy tropical break. We’re excited to welcome Solomon Airlines to Christchurch Airport and to offer travellers another South Pacific option.”
Solomon Airlines chief executive officer Paul Abbot says the new route opens up a new gateway for South Island travellers.
“We’re thrilled to launch direct flights between Christchurch and Port Vila, opening up a new connection to the Pacific for Kiwi travellers,” says Paul.
“This service makes it easier than ever for South Islanders to experience Vanuatu, from snorkelling and diving to markets, culture and relaxation.”
Vanuatu Tourism Office chief executive Adela Issachar Aru says the new flights strengthen access to the destination.
“We are delighted to welcome travellers from the South Island to discover the magic of Vanuatu,” says Adela.
“With our warm Ni-Vanuatu hospitality, rich culture and island experiences, Vanuatu offers an authentic Pacific getaway just a short journey away.”
The new route follows Christchurch Airport’s recent announcement of direct flights to Rarotonga starting in May 2026 and adds to the airport’s expanding Pacific network.
