Nelson Airport has welcomed the newly-released recommendations of the Independent Hearing Panel on its Project 2-Zero planning applications.
The Panel has recommended Nelson Airport’s private plan change and Notice of Requirement applications be confirmed.
Nelson Airport chief executive officer Brendan Cook says the plan change and Notice of Requirement are needed to enable and protect future airport operations while managing effects on the community, including through a new fully airport-funded noise mitigation programme for eligible properties.
The NOR includes provision for the airport to extend its runway to the north, however this is not likely to happen for another 10 – 15 years, Brendan says.
“We’re really pleased the recommendations from the independent panel recognise the vital importance of safeguarding the airport’s operations to ensure the continued connectivity, economic and social wellbeing of the Nelson-Tasman region.
“This process is about ensuring there is a fit-for-purpose planning framework that recognises the needs of a modern airport and ensures Nelson Airport can continue to successfully serve this community well into the future.”
Brendan said the Nelson City Council was meeting on December 19 to make its decision on the recommendations from the Independent Panel. The Council will make the final decision on the private plan change but can only make a recommendation to Nelson Airport Ltd on the Notice of Requirement. As a requiring authority, the airport is the final decision-maker for the NOR.
“We’re awaiting that further decision and recommendation from the Council, and will then spend some time absorbing their recommendations.”
The airport is required by law under the RMA to make its final decision on the NOR within 30 working days after receiving the Council’s recommendation. Under the RMA, the days between 20 December and 10 January do not count as “working days”.
