In a move to reshape the future of New Zealand’s tourism industry, the Tourism Data Leadership Group (TDLG) has released its draft “Strategic Business Plan 2024-2025” for public consultation. The detailed document, a blueprint for the next two years, aims to capture data to drive sustainability, resilience, and growth in the tourism sector.
Here’s what inside.
A Vision for Sustainable and Innovative Tourism
The TDLG’s plan, supported by a $5.08 million funding from the International Visitor Levy (IVL), outlines a strategic roadmap across four key areas: Māuitanga and Innovation, Core Datasets, Regenerative Transformation, and Leadership and System Capability. These pillars are designed to foster innovation in data usage, ensure the availability of essential datasets, promote sustainable tourism practices, and enhance leadership in the tourism data system.
Addressing Challenges and Setting Priorities
The plan acknowledges the challenges and dependencies common in implementing this ambitious roadmap. It emphasises the need for collaboration across various agencies and sectors to overcome these hurdles. The investment approach and prioritisation framework outlined in the document focus on sector benefits, strategic alignment, data gap filling, and sustainability.
A Comprehensive Overview of New Zealand’s Tourism Data Landscape
The document also provides an insightful overview of New Zealand’s current tourism data system, highlighting its strengths, areas for quality improvement, and key data gaps. This analysis is crucial for understanding the landscape in which the TDLG’s initiatives will be implemented.
The Role and Vision of TDLG
Detailing the role of the TDLG, the plan reaffirms its commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and separates tourism from travel. The vision to lead a world-class tourism data system is supported by core principles and a clear strategic direction. Success metrics are outlined to measure the impact of the initiatives in the short and mid-term.
Public Engagement: A Key to Success
With the new tri coalition in place, the timing is perfect for ensuring that the TDLG’s Plan aligns with the sector’s needs. The TDLG is actively seeking public feedback, particularly on the proposed key actions outlined in the Roadmap.
The TDLG encourages the public to read through the draft Strategic Plan and send any feedback to be emailed to [email protected] before 5 pm, Sunday, February 4 2024.
The Strategic Business Plan is expected to be concluded, following Ministerial endorsement, March 2024.
