In a move to promote sustainable tourism, the Department of Conservation (DOC) has announced the launch of a free booking system for the upcoming Tongariro Alpine Crossing season. Starting from October 14, visitors are urged to secure their spots in advance.
The collaboration between Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro and DOC aims to strike a balance between preserving the delicate environment, honouring the cultural significance of the region, and ensuring a safe and sustainable experience for all.
Catherine Wilson, DOC Director Heritage and Visitors, says there has been concerns about the increasing footfall on the Crossing. “The surge in visitor numbers is exerting pressure on both the conservation and cultural aspects of the area, as well as its infrastructure.”
She says that DOC has plans to make modifications to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the forthcoming years. These changes will focus on managing the challenges and reinforcing the cultural and heritage values of the region.
“By taking a proactive approach to the issues plaguing the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, we aim to safeguard this treasure for the generations to come. The feedback and information from this season’s bookings will be instrumental in shaping our future strategies.” she says.
Te Ngaehe Wanikau, spokesperson for Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro, emphasised the paramount importance of the spiritual, cultural, and physical well-being of the maunga and its surroundings.
“Our core principles of rangatiratanga, manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, and the associated tikanga of Manaaki Tangata Manaaki Whenua will be the foundation of our management and operations.” Te Ngaehe says.
It’s worth noting that the Tongariro National Park boasts a Dual World Heritage status, recognising both its cultural and natural heritage values.
While the DOC strongly recommends making reservations, they aren’t mandatory. Visitors arriving without prior bookings won’t face any penalties. Additionally, those with a Tongariro Northern Circuit hut or campsite reservation are exempt from this new booking system.
