Just in time for summer, from November Saturday 7 2026 cyclists and walkers can once again enjoy uninterrupted access across the full Remutaka Cycle Trail, with essential upgrades to the Cross Creek section now complete. The trail is one of New Zealand’s 23 Great Rides and connects Wellington and the Wairarapa through a unique mix of heritage, nature and adventure experiences.
The improvements between Cross Creek Yards and Cross Creek Carpark have brought the trail up to Grade 3 (Intermediate) standard, improving safety, rideability and the long-term resilience of one of the route’s most popular sections.
The upgraded section passes through the Cross Creek area, part of the former historic Remutaka Incline railway route, and is also used by riders taking part in Tour Aotearoa, New Zealand’s end-to-end cycling journey. The 4.8km between Cross Creek Yards and Summit was previously New Zealand’s steepest section of railway line – and operated for 77 years. Vegetation improvements now showcase the railway corridor even better to those passing through.
Remutaka Cycle Trail advisor, Janice Hill, said the reopening is an important milestone for both visitors and the wider region, and is thankful to the Department of Conservation for delivering the upgrades. “These improvements ensure the trail is safer and more enjoyable for everyone, from families and recreational riders through to experienced cyclists tackling a multi-day adventure.”
The reopening restores a key cycling and walking connection between Wellington and the Wairarapa. Following the completion of Te Ara Tupua, riders can enjoy a largely off-road journey linking Wellington Harbour, the Hutt Valley, the Remutaka Ranges and Wairarapa communities.
The project was delivered by the Department of Conservation, with funding support from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment’s NZ Cycle Trail Trail Enhancement Fund and support from Remutaka Cycle Trail partners.
Kathy Houkamau, DOC operations manager Wairarapa, says “We’re so pleased the Remutaka Cycle Trail is fully back in action, and keen cyclists can experience this again. The last few years have seen the collective working on improved wayfinding, access, and sustainability; overall, it works out to a better, safer ride.
“Our partners have been fantastic, and the public have been really understanding while the work was carried out, and now we can all enjoy this fantastic experience safely once more.”
The fully reopened trail is expected to benefit accommodation providers, cafes, transportation and tourism businesses across Wellington and Wairarapa, while encouraging more visitors to experience the region’s renowned outdoor and nature-based attractions.
