A key access road into Kahurangi National Park has reopened ahead of schedule, restoring public access to one of the park’s most popular alpine recreation areas.
Graham Valley Road, which provides access to Flora Carpark, was badly damaged during storms in June and July last year, with six major slips cutting access to the area. Repair work began in May and was expected to continue until spring but has now been completed several months early.
Department of Conservation acting Motueka operations manager Helen Otley says the reopening restores access to a popular starting point for visitors exploring Kahurangi National Park.
“We’re thrilled to have this well-used gateway to alpine experiences in Kahurangi National Park reopening to the public again.”
DOC and Tasman District Council jointly managed the project, which involved geotechnical investigations, engineering design and river works to stabilise the damaged section of road.
Helen says several walking tracks were also maintained while the road was closed, leaving them in good condition for visitors returning to the area.
Flora Carpark provides access to tramping routes including the Tableland Circuit, Mt Arthur Summit Route, Flora Circuit and Ellis Basin Route, ranging from family-friendly walks to expert backcountry trips.
The road remains suitable only for four-wheel-drive vehicles during winter, with chains recommended when snow and ice are present.
