Nelson Airport will begin construction next week on a new covered walkway designed to improve the passenger experience while reducing the airport’s carbon footprint.
The 130-metre extension will connect the terminal with southern aircraft parking stands, providing passengers with shelter from the weather while incorporating almost 200 roof-mounted solar panels.
Chief executive Brendan Cook says the project will deliver a more consistent boarding experience across all airlines operating from Nelson Airport.
“It also means a consistent boarding experience whether you’re choosing to fly with our national carrier or one of the smaller regional airlines operating from Nelson, and is part of our commitment to supporting the operations of all our airline partners.”
The solar installation is expected to generate enough electricity to offset around 12 per cent of the terminal’s annual power consumption, helping reduce both operating costs and emissions.
Construction is expected to continue until late 2026. Existing container walkways will remain in use during the works, with temporary passenger access routes established as required.
