The Department of Conservation is encouraging people to explore Canterbury’s outdoors this winter, with rangers sharing their favourite walks for the school holidays and Matariki.
The recommended walks were selected for their winter sunshine, scenery, relatively dry tracks, accessibility and proximity to Christchurch.
Awaroa/Godley Head topped the list, recognised for its coastal views, military history and abundant wildlife.
DOC ranger Craig Alexander says the track remains one of Christchurch’s lesser-known attractions.
“I’d love to see more people do the Awaroa/Godley Head walk. There’s just so much to see – the wildlife, marine species and the military history.”
Other recommendations include Kura Tāwhiti/Castle Hill, Bealey Spur, Te Tautea o Hinekakai/Devils Punchbowl and Mount Sunday.
DOC says the walks offer an opportunity to get outdoors and experience Canterbury’s natural and cultural landscapes during the winter season.
