Calm winter conditions are helping attract more Aucklanders onto the Hauraki Gulf, with one jet ski operator reporting growing interest in off-season adventures.
Hibiscus JetSki Hire & Tours owner Dr Jürgen Kolb says fine weather through May and June has highlighted winter as an alternative time to explore the gulf, with calmer seas, fewer boats and improved opportunities for sightseeing, fishing and wildlife encounters.
“Many people assume jet ski adventures are only for summer, but winter can offer some of the most spectacular days on the water,” Jürgen says.
The Whangaparāoa-based business says winter conditions can make it easier to spot marine wildlife, including dolphins, seabirds, little blue penguins and New Zealand fur seals, while destinations such as Tiritiri Matangi, Motuora and Kawau Island remain accessible on suitable days.
Jürgen says the business is seeing growing interest from Aucklanders looking for local outdoor experiences that don’t require extended travel.
He stresses that winter trips are only undertaken in appropriate weather conditions, with customers receiving safety briefings and guidance on responsible behaviour around marine wildlife and protected areas.
