DOC is relocating its Queenstown visitor centre to Glenorchy and introducing a new mobile ranger unit as part of a shift in how it delivers visitor information across the Whakatipu district.
From summer, the visitor centre will operate from Glenorchy, positioning it closer to the main access points for Mt Aspiring and Fiordland national parks. DOC will also roll out a mobile unit allowing rangers to meet visitors at key sites across the district before they head into the outdoors.
DOC Whakatipu wai Māori operations manager David Butt says the move reflects changing visitor behaviour and the need to deliver information closer to where people begin their trips.
“DOC has a long and successful history operating our Visitor Centre out of Stanley Street in the CBD but the way people interact with information has changed significantly in recent years,” David says.
“Our visitor centres have a vital role in providing important information that enhances people’s experience in nature, as well as helping people make safe decisions. To do that effectively, we need to adapt with the times, and switch to a model that meets people where they are.”
David says Glenorchy is a logical base because it serves as the gateway to the region’s national parks, where many visitors are heading.
The Glenorchy centre will operate as a seasonal service, with the flexibility to open seven days a week during peak holiday periods. It will close during the quieter winter months from June to September, while staff focus on other visitor engagement and community outreach work. DOC says it will maintain an online presence for visitor enquiries year-round.
The change follows a Glenorchy pop-up visitor centre trial in January 2025, which recorded a 28 per cent increase in visitor numbers compared with the Queenstown site during the same period the previous year.
David says the trial also generated strong feedback from both visitors and the Glenorchy community.
DOC expects to roll out the new approach in November 2026, with details of the new Glenorchy visitor centre location to be confirmed.
