A West Coast-based expedition guide who works aboard ships in Antarctica and South America has launched a free online course aimed at helping tourism guides move beyond simply reciting facts and create experiences visitors genuinely remember.
Storytelling for Expedition Guides introduces the TORE method of thematic interpretation, a communication framework designed to make ideas thematic, organised, relevant and enjoyable.
Expedition guide Ian Johnson splits his time between the West Coast, guiding aboard expedition ships in the polar regions and South America, and delivering international storytelling workshops for guides and tourism operators.
The course grew from Ian’s experiences working alongside new guides entering the tourism and expedition industries.
“People are drowning in facts,” Ian says.
“Facts are important, but most facts disappear almost immediately. Story is what people remember.”
Structured around an introductory session and six short modules, the course explores storytelling techniques, along with the psychology and biology behind why humans respond strongly to stories.
Each module includes a free downloadable workbook featuring practical exercises, storytelling tools and examples designed for immediate use in the field.
Ian says the ideas behind the course are relevant well beyond tourism.
The course is available free online.
