Aotea Square will transform into a glowing night-time destination this winter with Winter Light Cathedral, a free walk-through light installation presented by Auckland Live and supported by Auckland Council.
Opening on Saturday, May 30, the installation features tens of thousands of LED lights arranged in cathedral-inspired arches, inviting visitors to step inside a tunnel of light, warmth and movement in the heart of the city centre.
Created by Mandylights, Winter Light Cathedral draws inspiration from traditional arched windows, creating an installation that shifts and sparkles as visitors move through it.
Subtle by day and radiant after dark, the installation is designed to encourage Aucklanders and visitors into the city during winter evenings. The installation will be illuminated throughout the event period and is best viewed at night.
Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson says the installation highlights the role public spaces can play during winter.
“Winter Light Cathedral shows how imaginative use of our public spaces can transform Tāmaki Makaurau during the cooler months.
“It brings light, warmth and vibrancy to central Auckland, encouraging people to come in, connect, and experience all our city has to offer – especially important when the winter weather otherwise draws us indoors. I can’t wait to step under the arches and take in the tens of thousands of lights.”
Auckland Live director Daniel Clarke says Winter Light Cathedral adds another reason to visit the city throughout June.
“Whether people are coming in for dinner, live performance, exhibitions or simply to explore the city after dark, Winter Light Cathedral creates a welcoming experience for audiences of all ages.”
Visible from across Aotea Square, the installation creates a focal point within the square, while inside, visitors are surrounded by thousands of shimmering points of light in a more intimate environment.
Alongside Winter Light Cathedral in June, Aucklanders and visitors can explore live performances across Auckland Live venues and major exhibitions including Forever Tomorrow: Chinese Art Now and In Trust for Tomorrow: The Greg J Moyle Foundation Bequest at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki.
