Since 2020, the Bay of Plenty Regional Council has operated the Regional Tertiary Commuter bus services to enhance student access to education and strengthen regional connectivity. Launched as a trial in collaboration with local tertiary institutions and backed by government funding, the service has been a crucial link for students in various communities.
Councillor Andrew von Dadelszen, chair of the Public Transport Committee, acknowledged the impact of changes to the service on students and says “We understand the impact this decision will have on students who rely on these connections, and we remain committed to supporting them through this transition,” he says.
“We will continue working closely with tertiary institutions to ensure students are informed in advance and aware of any available alternative transport options.”
While facing financial pressures, the council remains committed to sustainable public transport that benefits the broader community. In regions with limited options, such as the Rotorua-Tauranga route, Bay of Plenty Regional Council will continue advocating for improved transport solutions, aiming to make a positive impact even in challenging circumstances.
