Rubbish bins banished from Ruapehu

Mount Ruapehu visitors will be carrying more than just their ski gear for the remainder of the snow season, following the removal of general waste bins from the mountain.

The Mt Ruapehu ski resort stated that removing bins from Mt Ruapehu aligns with the business’ pledge to The Tiaki Promise – a collective that encourages caring for the land for future generations.

“At Mt Ruapehu we follow the Tiaki Promise and are committed to acting as a guardian, protecting and preserving our home,” says a Mt Ruapehu ski resort spokesperson.

“As a part of our commitment to place, and alongside one of our core values of kaitiakitanga (protection and conservation of our natural environment), we have committed to zero waste to landfill by 2027, if not sooner.

“As a starting point, this winter season we will introduce a ‘pack in, pack out’ waste initiative – essentially, what you bring up on maunga, waste wise, you take back down with you.”

To support the initiative, the resort asks visitors to be mindful of what they bring onto the mountain and to be prepared to bring all non-recyclable items back down with them. Recycling bins will still be available.
