Four WellingtonNZ-managed entertainment venues– Michael Fowler Centre, Opera House, TSB Arena and Shed 6 – are the first in New Zealand to be awarded EarthCheck’s Bronze Benchmark accreditation.
WellingtonNZ has compiled and provided data to EarthCheck – the world’s leading sustainability benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism – to achieve bronze certification.
It takes into consideration key factors like water, gas, and electricity consumption as well as waste recycling, corporate social responsibility, and community contribution.
WellingtonNZ event and experiences general manager Warrick Dent says while delighted the venues have been certified, it marks the start of an ongoing journey to bigger goals.
“The aim is to gain silver accreditation in the near future. To achieve this we will further develop and cement our plans while working with clients and key stakeholders to deliver sustainable events for the Wellington region.
“It is another exciting step in Wellington’s goal of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2050.”
The four Wellington venues join Australian events companies such as the Melbourne Convention Centre, Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, Adelaide Convention Centre, ICC in Sydney, and Venue 114 on the Gold Coast as part of the EarthCheck family.
