TIME Magazine Names Camp Glenorchy Eco Retreat to the World’s 100 Greatest Places of 2019

Camp Glenorchy Eco Retreat has been named to TIME Magazine’s list of “The World’s Greatest Places of 2019.”

Featured in the 02 September 2019 cover issue available on newsstands now, it is the only New Zealand accommodation named to the list.

To compile the list, TIME solicited nominations across a variety of categories from its editors and correspondents around the world, as well as industry experts. It evaluated each one based on key factors including quality, originality, sustainability, innovation and influence. Editors were looking for “The sense that one has stumbled upon the extraordinary.”

Camp Glenorchy Eco Retreat is featured as New Zealand’s first net-zero energy accommodations, using 50 per cent less energy and water than similar types of offerings. It goes on to describe, “The design channels the surrounding valley’s natural beauty through the use of construction materials like recycled timber while still incorporating upscale features like an in-room tablet that enables guests to monitor their energy usage.

Keiran Frost, managing director of The Headwaters, of which Camp Glenorchy is a part, comments, “To be included as one of just 44 accommodations named to TIME Magazine’s World’s 100 Greatest Places list is exciting recognition of what we set out to do with Camp Glenorchy: to create a warm, welcoming experience while showcasing how sustainability, artistry, a stunning setting and year-round comfort can inspire, educate and delight our guests.”

The only other New Zealand experiences also on the list include Wellington’s urban ecosanctuary Zealandia, as well as Hiakai Restaurant, also of Wellington, featuring Maori-inspired native ingredients and cooking.

Camp Glenorchy Eco Retreat was also recently honoured with one of seven 2019 Qualmark 100% Pure New Zealand Experience Awards, recognising excellence in providing visitor experiences that embody sustainable tourism practices and guest hosting, as well as the 2019 Tourism Industry Aotearoa (TIA) Sustainability Innovation Award earlier this month.
