Hospitality New Zealand has welcomed the introduction of new tourism and hospitality subjects into the National Curriculum for Years 12 and 13, saying they will strengthen pathways into the industry.
The Government has announced nine new industry-led senior secondary subjects, including Hospitality Food and Beverage and Tourism, which will be developed with industry input.
Hospitality New Zealand chief executive Kristy Phillips says the changes will help students better understand the career opportunities available in the sector.
“Hospitality relies on vocational training. We are pleased to see that the Government has strengthened pathways into hospitality from secondary school, and that the hospitality industry will have input into the development of these subjects.”
Kristy says the new subjects will help students develop practical skills while providing clearer pathways into further study, training and apprenticeships.
Hospitality New Zealand says it looks forward to working with the Services Industry Skills Board to help develop the curriculum.
