TikTok contributed an estimated $1.2 billion to New Zealand’s GDP and supported almost 9,700 jobs in 2025, according to a new Infometrics report commissioned by the social media platform.
The report found 671,000 New Zealanders each month visit restaurants and cafés, attend events or travel to destinations after discovering them on TikTok, with spending at local businesses accounting for an estimated $434 million of the platform’s GDP contribution.
Infometrics chief executive Brad Olsen says TikTok has become an increasingly important marketing channel for businesses of all sizes.
“TikTok’s economic contribution to New Zealand is substantial, and the breadth of businesses that use the platform … is remarkable.”
The report also highlights tourism operators including Kiwi Water Park in Cromwell and ZORB Rotorua as examples of businesses using the platform to reach new audiences.
The research estimates around 309,000 New Zealand businesses use TikTok each month, with businesses reporting a median sales uplift of 20–30 per cent from activity on the platform.
