Air New Zealand improved its operational performance in June, with 86 per cent of flights arriving within 15 minutes of schedule despite severe winter weather and disruption caused by the fire at Wellington Airport.
The airline operated 12,279 domestic and international flights during the month. While on-time performance eased slightly from May’s record 89.1 per cent, it was up from 78.3 per cent in June last year.
Chief operations officer, ground and in-flight, Kate Boyer says the result reflects continued improvements to the airline’s operational resilience.
“June was another solid month for our operations. While our on-time performance eased slightly compared with May, it came during a month where we managed several significant operational challenges, including the fire at Wellington Airport, periods of severe winter weather, and other disruptions outside our control.
“Despite those challenges, our overall on-time performance improved by almost eight percentage points compared with June last year.”
The airline says reactionary delays, where one delayed flight affects the rest of the day’s schedule, were reduced by more than 50 per cent compared with June 2025, helping the network recover more quickly from disruption.
Air New Zealand also reported further improvements in cancellations within its control, which fell from 1.7 per cent to 0.7 per cent year-on-year. Overall cancellations increased to 3.3 per cent, largely because of weather and the Wellington Airport fire.
Kate says the airline is now applying lessons from improvements to its regional network across its jet operations through schedule changes and operational initiatives.
