Christchurch Airport has welcomed the inaugural Solomon Airlines direct service between Christchurch and Port Vila, providing South Islanders with a new direct connection to Vanuatu.
The first flight departed on July 2, with the new service adding Vanuatu to Christchurch Airport’s growing network of direct Pacific and Australian leisure destinations.
Christchurch Airport chief executive Justin Watson says the route strengthens travel and tourism links across the Pacific.
“We’re celebrating more than a new flight. We’re creating new opportunities for people to explore a remarkable part of the Pacific and strengthening the connections between our communities.”
Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger says the service expands the city’s international network while supporting tourism, business and trade.
Solomon Airlines chief executive Matthew Findlay says the route also strengthens links between New Zealand, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands through the airline’s partnership with Air Vanuatu.
The Airbus A320 service has a flight time of about four hours and 10 minutes.
