New Zealand’s car rental sector is benefiting from rising international visitor numbers, with growing demand for flexible transport options from tourists, business travellers and group visitors.
According to Radio New Zealand, overseas visitor arrivals reached 3.51 million in the year ended December 2025, up 196,000 on the previous year.
The increase is driving demand for rental vehicles across a broad range of travellers, from holidaymakers and working holiday visitors to corporate groups and university clubs, with larger vehicles such as people movers and minibuses also becoming increasingly popular.
Global demand for rental vehicles is also continuing to grow. Mordor Intelligence estimates the global car rental market was worth US$153.47 billion in 2025 and forecasts it will reach US$277.28 billion by 2031.
The report says New Zealand operators are responding by expanding vehicle options and nationwide coverage to cater for travellers undertaking longer, multi-destination itineraries.
Providers such as NZRAC say broad branch networks and flexible pick-up and drop-off options are becoming increasingly important as visitors seek greater independence when exploring both islands.
