Central Otago’s reputation as New Zealand’s leading organic wine region has been reinforced at the 2026 Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Wine Awards, with local producers claiming 40 per cent of all medals awarded.
Of the 181 medals presented, 73 were awarded to 11 Central Otago wineries, highlighting the region’s growing strength in organic viticulture.
Gibbston Valley emerged as one of the standout performers, securing six gold medals and the highest overall medal tally at the awards.
Central Otago Winegrowers Association general manager Carolyn Murray says the results reflected the region’s commitment to organic production.
“With 30 per cent of our vineyard area now under organic management, Central Otago has become New Zealand’s leading organic wine region,” she says.
“This achievement reflects the commitment of growers who believe that great wine begins in the vineyard – with healthy soils, balanced ecosystems, and a deep respect for the land.”
Momentum behind organic wine production continues to build nationally. The 2025 New Zealand Winegrowers Sustainability Report found that 16 per cent of wineries now hold organic certification, up from 10 per cent in 2024.
Gibbston Valley chief winemaker Christopher Keys says the awards reflected both the quality being achieved in organic vineyards and the broader progress of the sector.
“It is a joy to see the consistent excellence New Zealand’s organic vineyards have reached,” he says.
Now in its 13th year, the Aotearoa New Zealand Organic Wine Awards recognise certified organic wines through a blind tasting process judged by an independent, consumer-based panel.
Other major award winners included Greystone, named Riedel Vineyard of the Year, Mount Edward’s Muirkirk Pinot Noir 2024, which received the Riedel Wine of the Show title, and Quartz Reef Wines, which was recognised as Sustainable Vineyard of the Year.
Gibbston Valley’s six gold medals included honours for its 2025 GV Collection Rosé, 2024 China Terrace Chardonnay, 2024 Le Maitre Pinot Noir, 2023 China Terrace Pinot Noir, 2024 School House Pinot Gris and 2024 School House Pinot Noir.
