Hamilton City Council says major events continue to deliver economic and community benefits for the city, following a year that saw more than 68,000 people attend council-supported events across Hamilton.
The city’s Major Event Sponsorship Fund supported 11 major events during the 2025/26 period, including sporting, cultural and community events designed to attract visitors and increase exposure for the city.
Visitor economy benefits
Hamilton deputy mayor Geoff Taylor, chair of the Major Events Subcommittee, says the programme is helping drive visitor spending and showcase Hamilton as an events destination.
“These events bring energy and activity into Hamilton, attract visitors who might not otherwise be here, and help showcase what the city has to offer,” Geoff says.
“When we talk about the economic benefits of major events, domestic visitors bring around $150–$250 per night; international visitors approximately $280 per day; and business events are the highest at around $400 per day.”
Geoff says the city is continuing to attract larger-scale events, including Equifest, which will receive a new three-year funding agreement.
New funding approved
At the May 12 Major Events Subcommittee meeting, councillors approved sponsorship support for a range of events across the 2026/27 period.
One-year funding was approved for:
