A packed calendar of sport, music and cultural events is set to take place across Lower Hutt this May, as Hutt City Council looks to boost community participation and visitor activity.
Events will be staged across venues including Lower Hutt Town Hall, Lower Hutt Events Centre and Avalon Park.
Diverse programme across the city
The programme includes the NZ Blackgloves National Muay Thai trials on May 2, the Family Tough Guy and Gal Challenge in Wainuiomata from May 4 to 9, and My Walk-in Wardrobe sustainable fashion market on May 17.
Music events include Music in Motutawa, a free concert celebrating NZ Music Month, and Symphony in the Hutt on May 22 featuring Orchestra Wellington and guest artist Holly Smith.
The Hip Hop Unite National Championships and World Qualifiers will run from May 22 to 24, while the Young Singers in Harmony regional competition takes place on May 26.
Economic and visitor benefits
Lower Hutt mayor Ken Laban says the programme reflects the city’s diversity and supports local businesses.
“These events offer something for everyone, whether you’re into sport, music, fashion or just getting out with whānau.
“They also bring valuable visitors into Lower Hutt, supporting local businesses and showcasing what makes our city such a great place to be.”
Growing events destination
Ken says Lower Hutt is strengthening its position as a host for major events.
“The Muay Thai trials are being held outside Auckland for the first time in nearly 20 years, and My Walk-in Wardrobe is the country’s largest sustainable fashion market right in our city.”
“Dance and music will shine too, with Hip Hop Unite returning, Symphony in the Hutt setting the tone, and the Town Hall filled with rich barbershop harmonies.”
The council says a mix of free and ticketed events aims to encourage participation from both locals and visitors throughout the month.
