Nelson Tasman has recorded the highest domestic visitor satisfaction score in New Zealand, achieving 8.9 out of 10 in the Angus and Associates Domestic Visitor Satisfaction Survey for the year ending March 2025.
According to figures cited by NZRAC from a report published by the Nelson Regional Development Agency, the result highlights strong appeal for travellers seeking nature, food and wine, and outdoor experiences.
The region’s key attractions include Abel Tasman National Park, Great Taste Trail and established mountain biking networks.
Popular touring base
NZRAC says the top of the South Island has become a popular starting point for self-drive itineraries linking Marlborough, Nelson and the West Coast.
Visitors arriving through Nelson Airport or travelling from Picton after the Cook Strait ferry crossing often collect rental vehicles to explore independently.
The company says the region’s compact geography makes road travel practical, with attractions such as Golden Bay, Buller Gorge and Kahurangi National Park within accessible driving distance.
West Coast connection
NZRAC says many visitors continue south and west into the West Coast, combining Nelson Tasman with a broader touring circuit.
The company says the West Coast, where 65 per cent of land is conservation estate managed by the Department of Conservation, remains popular for glacier experiences, heritage attractions and the Paparoa Track.
Greymouth is commonly used as a central base, with one-way vehicle hires allowing travellers to continue to Christchurch via Arthur’s Pass or connect with the TranzAlpine rail service.
Multi-region travel demand
NZRAC says providers such as NZRAC operate branches in Nelson and Greymouth, supporting one-way hires between the two centres and onward travel to other South Island destinations.
The company says Nelson Tasman’s strong satisfaction ratings and the West Coast’s contrasting landscapes continue to attract independent travellers planning multi-day South Island holidays.
