Party leaders will go head-to-head on New Zealand’s energy future in Queenstown next month, with a cross-party debate forming part of the Electrify Queenstown event.
Labour leader Chris Hipkins, Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick and The Opportunity Party’s Qiulae Wong are confirmed to speak on May 18, before taking part in a leaders’ debate moderated by Paddy Gower. A Government or Coalition representative is also expected to join the line-up.
The three-day conference (May 17–19) will examine how electrification could reshape sectors including tourism, with a focus on reducing costs and improving resilience.
Organisers say the discussion comes at a time of rising fuel prices and increasing pressure on travel costs, highlighting the relevance of energy policy for visitor access and regional tourism.
Set in one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing tourism regions, the event brings together political leaders, industry figures and energy experts to explore practical pathways for businesses and households.
Speakers include Sir Rod Drury, Mike Casey and Dr Saul Griffith, with sessions covering cost savings, productivity gains and funding options.
