Skyline Rotorua will close its mountain biking operation in March 2027, as the attraction moves toward a new phase of visitor experience development.
The trails will remain open until March 25, 2027, giving riders a final year of access before closure.
Shift in visitor offering
Skyline Rotorua general manager Andrew Jensen says the decision marks the end of a 12-year chapter for the attraction.
“Mountain biking has been an integral part of Skyline Rotorua’s story,” Andrew says.
The company says it will continue investing in new experiences, with further development plans expected to be announced later in 2026.
Impact on Rotorua’s tourism mix
Rotorua has built a strong international reputation as a mountain biking destination, supported by facilities at Skyline Rotorua and the nearby Whakarewarewa Forest.
While Skyline’s trails will close, the wider network is expected to continue supporting the region’s cycle tourism offering.
Continuing operations
Skyline Rotorua says its other attractions — including the gondola, luge, zipline and restaurant — will continue operating throughout the transition.
The business says it will work to retain staff within other areas of the operation following the closure.
Industry context
The move reflects ongoing evolution in visitor attractions, with operators increasingly refreshing offerings to maintain demand and remain competitive.
Skyline Rotorua has previously invested in upgrades to its luge tracks, with further developments planned as part of its next phase.
