A new interline agreement between Air New Zealand and Air Chathams is set to strengthen regional connectivity, with the first same-ticket service from Whakatāne arriving in Auckland.
The partnership allows travellers to book a single ticket across both airlines, with baggage checked through to their final destination on the wider domestic network.
Boost for regional tourism
Air New Zealand chief transformation and alliances officer Michael Williams says the agreement will improve access to regional destinations.
“Working alongside partners like Air Chathams makes it easier for customers to travel across our country and strengthens local economies and regional tourism,” Michael says.
The connection links Whakatāne more directly into the national network, making it easier for visitors to travel between smaller centres and key tourism hubs.
Simplifying travel
Air Chathams chief executive Duane Emeny says the partnership reduces complexity for travellers.
“This partnership connects Whakatāne more directly into the national network and gives our customers simpler access to the rest of New Zealand,” Duane says.
Passengers can now connect through Auckland on a single booking, removing the need for separate tickets and baggage transfers.
Supporting regional access
Associate Transport Minister James Meager says improved air connectivity plays an important role in regional development.
“Regional air services play a critical role in supporting tourism and trade and connecting smaller communities,” Meager says.
Further expansion planned
The Whakatāne route is the first stage of the interline partnership, with both airlines exploring opportunities to extend the model to other regions.
