A workforce initiative supporting employment across the Auckland Airport precinct is marking 10 years of operation, highlighting its role in underpinning sectors including tourism and hospitality.
Minister for Social Development and Employment Louise Upston says the Ara Jobs and Skills Hub has played a key role in connecting people to jobs across the precinct.
Over the past decade, the hub has supported more than 1,440 people into employment, helped over 1,700 young people through training pathways, and provided 3,600 learners with skills and training opportunities.
Supporting tourism and aviation workforce
The initiative supports recruitment and training across around 800 businesses employing 25,000 people within the Auckland Airport precinct.
Upston says the hub provides coordinated workforce planning across a range of sectors.
“The Ara Jobs and Skills Hub facilitates workforce planning, recruitment and training for businesses spanning aviation, construction, logistics and service sectors like tourism, retail, accommodation and hospitality,” Upston says.
“The scale of these workforce needs demands a platform for long-term planning and coordination.”
Pipeline for future growth
The Ministry of Social Development has partnered with the hub throughout its 10-year operation, supporting recruitment and training pathways into airport-based roles.
Upston says the programme will continue to play a role as activity grows across the precinct.
“It’s great to see positive signals for renewed infrastructure development at the Auckland Airport precinct, and MSD will continue to support training and recruiting for workforce needs,” Upston says.
The Auckland Airport precinct is one of New Zealand’s largest employment hubs and plays a central role in supporting the country’s aviation and tourism sectors.
