Wellington Airport is preparing for a busy summer period, with nearly half a million travellers expected to pass through the terminal over the next four weeks.
The busiest single day is expected to be Thursday, December 18, when around 18,000 travellers are forecast to travel through the airport.
Between December 15 and January 11, a total of 440,000 seats will be operated from Wellington Airport, including 350,000 domestic seats and 90,000 international seats.
The most popular domestic destinations from Wellington are Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown and Nelson.
Sydney is the most popular international destination, with capacity up 24 per cent compared with the same period last year. The Gold Coast is also proving popular, with Jetstar increasing services from three to five flights per week over the holiday period.
Wellington Airport head of operations Matthew Palliser says travellers can help make their journey smoother by planning ahead.
“We recommend checking in online before leaving home if you can, and arriving early to allow plenty of time to drop off bags and go through security,” Matthew says.
“When packing for your trip, power banks and spare lithium batteries need to be in carry-on luggage only.
“Once you’re here, you can try Parrotdog’s Wellington Airport lager, which is only available on tap at our new multi-level venue, Good Day.
“While you’re here, you’re also likely to see Air New Zealand’s first-ever electric aircraft on the tarmac.
“We’re proud to be the most Christmassy airport in the country, with more than 65 individually decorated Christmas trees raising funds for cystic fibrosis, as well as live music and Christmas carol singing.
“For younger children, our Kidzone play area is now open in the southwest pier, past domestic security.”
