Explore Group will launch its new Auckland–Coromandel ferry service this Labour Weekend, reinstating a key transport and tourism link between the regions.
The first sailing departs Auckland’s Viaduct Harbour at 4.45pm on Friday, October 24, arriving at Hannaford’s Wharf at 6.45pm. Saturday, Sunday and Monday (Labour Day) services will also operate, with extended schedules during public holidays and peak summer periods.
The journey takes just over two hours, with passengers able to enjoy a scenic cruise through the eastern Hauraki Gulf aboard Explore’s premium fleet.
Explore Group managing director William Goodfellow says there has been strong enthusiasm from both Auckland and Coromandel communities for the return of the service.
“We are really excited to kick off this weekend. The enthusiasm from both Coromandel and Auckland-based stakeholders has been tremendous and we look forward to delivering a service to meet the demand,” says William.
“The service complements our existing eastern Hauraki destinations, including Rotoroa Island and Man O’ War, Waiheke, and will include expanded options for passengers to experience these other islands too.”
Passengers will disembark at Hannaford’s Wharf, with a shuttle bus connection to Coromandel Town provided by Thames–Coromandel District Council.
Council economic development lead Mitch King says the new service highlights collaboration between the region and operators.
“This is a great example of what can happen when community, council and business unite with purpose.”
Coromandel–Colville Business Association chair Jennifer Ashman says the community has been eager to see the ferry return.
“We couldn’t be happier that the ferry service is returning to Coromandel this summer,” she says. “My husband Rob and I are looking forward to travelling on the inaugural service from Auckland to Coromandel this Friday to support the start of this exciting new chapter.”
Destination Hauraki Coromandel general manager Hadley Dryden says the scenic journey provides a unique opportunity to showcase the region.
“This route through the Hauraki Gulf offers stunning coastal views, working mussel farms and opportunities to spot marine wildlife along the way. The return of the ferry provides an ideal connection and contrast for travellers in both directions.”
Return fares from Auckland to Coromandel Town, including the shuttle transfer, are $135 for adults and $67.50 for children. An extended transfer to Whitianga is also available for $185 per adult and $92.50 per child.
