Island Direct has expanded its Auckland–Waiheke ferry service with the launch of Te Waiora, a second vessel joining the company’s Hauraki Gulf fleet.
The 22-metre catamaran will operate alongside Te Waipiki, introducing hourly sailings with departures almost every hour on the half-hour from both Downtown Auckland and Matiatia Wharf. The addition brings more than 150 extra seats per sailing per day, giving locals, commuters and visitors greater flexibility and choice when travelling to Waiheke.
The vessel’s name, Te Waiora, meaning “living healthy waters”, was gifted to Island Direct by Ngāti Paoa.
To mark its maiden sailings, Island Direct will offer $1 one-way fares for the first 500 passengers who book to travel on Thursday, October 30.
Island Direct director David Todd says the expansion represents an important growth milestone for the company as it enters its third summer of operations.
“We’ve listened closely to our customers, and their message was clear: more sailings, more flexibility and a reliable alternative for Waiheke travel. With Te Waiora joining the fleet, we are adding around 150 extra seats per sailing with 12–14 additional sailings most days of the week.
“This investment reflects our long-term commitment to the Waiheke community and local tourism, and the $1 one-way fares are our way of thanking the community for their support while welcoming new passengers on board,” says David.
Tickets can be purchased online using the code HELLOSUMMER or in person at the ferry terminal. Passengers with existing bookings for sailings on October 30 will also be included in the promotion and will receive a code to access the special pricing at another time.
Island Direct operates from its Downtown Ticket Office, located beside Pier 13. The full timetable is available at www.islanddirect.co.nz
