Many Kiwis are planning to pause, reflect and celebrate the occasion with a winter getaway with friends and family. And the data shows it’s the quieter, scenic spots that are seeing the biggest jump in popularity, particularly those known for clear skies and starry views.
New Booking.com search data for Matariki weekend 2025 confirms South Island destinations have increased in popularity for the long weekend occasion. Christchurch has climbed up a spot from last year to second place, proving to be a popular hub for travellers flying into the South Island for nearby skiing and exploration.
Lake Tekapo climbed three spots from this time last year, as more travellers seek out peaceful, low-light destinations. Skyrim Lodge, a popular property in the region, featured on Booking.com’s 2025 list of Aotearoa’s Best Dark Sky Stargazing Spots.
The North Island still pulls strong interest this Matariki weekend. Hamilton, Rotorua, Taupō and Tauranga have all gained momentum, each climbing up the list.
Tauranga, which jumped three spots this year, proves it’s a favourite all year round. And for those looking to experience New Zealand’s biggest city, Auckland remains the number one most-searched destination for Matariki weekend.
