In a spotlight moment for Northland, Waipu Cove has been awarded the title of Best Family Beach in New Zealand Herald’s recent annual beach competition.
Highlighting the beach’s rising reputation as a top destination for families Mayor of Whangārei District, Vince Cocurullo says the success is a multitude of things.
With the recent traffic traveling north and the closure of the Brynderwyns, “people have been exploring locations other than those they would normally visit,” he says.
This shift has allowed visitors and locals alike to discover the welcoming family atmosphere that Waipu Cove offers. The easy access from the carpark to the beach, combined with the close proximity of all necessary amenities, has made it an attractive choice for families. “It is understandable why it would be chosen as the Best Family Beach,” says Vince.
For Waipu Cove stepping into the spotlight, maintaining its natural beauty and family-friendly environment is a priority. Vince emphasises the importance of the council’s relationship with the local community in managing this balance. “As popularity increases, so does the need to constantly improve,” he says.
Recent improvements, such as the installation of speed humps and the addition of shared pathways, also reflect the community’s efforts to enhance safety and accessibility.
Waipu’s strong Scottish heritage further enriches its appeal as a family destination.
Vince notes that, “when one has a historical or spiritual connection to a beach or area, they generally take ownership and pride in making everything work in that area.” He highlights Northland’s significance as the birthplace of New Zealand, along with its cultural diversity, as factors that attract visitors. “Having that historical connection and rich cultural diversity makes people want to travel and explore.”
