Christchurch is set to see a new stadium open in the heart of the city in April 2026.
Venues Ōtautahi general manager commercial Danny Schroder says Te Kaha will give the garden city a new option for conferences and events, with a large function space, 23 small meeting rooms and two larger terraces which can be set up to host dinners with the stadium as a unique background setting.
Christchurch currently has a temporary stadium, put in place after the original one was destroyed in the 2011 Christchurch Earthquakes.
He says the new stadium will be able to seat up to 25,000 people – which can be expanded to up to 30,000 if needed, and host a 40,000 person standing concert.
This makes it the second largest concert venue in the country – behind Eden Park in Auckland, which can accommodate 50,000 people – and the largest concert venue in the South Island.
With a permanent roof structure and the ability to add additional stadium seating when needed, the stadium is within walking distance of a number of Christchurch hotels and one kilometre from Te Pae.
