Auckland Airport has passed the halfway mark in its once-in-a-generation infrastructure upgrade, with travellers beginning to see the future of check-in take shape.
More than 50% of the terminal integration programme has now been delivered. In FY26 alone, Auckland Airport commissioned nearly $1 billion of new aeronautical assets, including the 250,000-square-metre northern airfield expansion and major stormwater infrastructure upgrades, which both form part of the $3.9 billion programme that includes the integrated domestic jet terminal.
Auckland Airport Chief Executive, Carrie Hurihanganui, says reaching this milestone reflected the scale of the work being delivered across New Zealand’s gateway airport, home to more than 90% of the country’s international long-haul capacity.
“With the majority of international travel passing through Auckland Airport, and demand forecast to grow in the years ahead, we have a critical role to play in enabling New Zealand’s growth and prosperity. We’re focused on getting on and delivering the infrastructure needed to support that.
“Major projects are complete and others are moving quickly through construction, with significant technology improvements delivered alongside. There is plenty of work still ahead, but we’re really pleased with how the programme is tracking.”
The full integration programme spans the new integrated domestic jet terminal, expansion of the existing international terminal, a new state-of-the-art baggage system, airfield development, transport connections and sustainability upgrades. Together, Auckland Airport and its precinct operate as New Zealand’s largest airport and third-largest port by value, contributing an estimated $40 billion in economic output each year.
Carrie says the changes underway in the international check-in area were among the clearest signs of the transformation now becoming visible to travellers.
“Much of the work delivered so far has happened behind the scenes or beyond the parts of the airport most travellers see. That is starting to change.
“The flagship check-in zone we’re preparing to open gives travellers an early look at what’s coming: smarter technology, a more intuitive layout and less time spent queueing, while giving airlines greater flexibility to respond to busy periods.
“It’s the first visible step towards a more seamless, technology-led check-in experience, supported by airport and airline teams, and the future integrated terminal where domestic jet and international travellers will check-in under one roof.”
A faster, easier start to the journey
For the past six months, the 520-square-metre Zone C, at the heart of the check-in hall, has been out of sight behind construction hoardings while crews have given the space a floor-to-ceiling overhaul.
Gone are the 90s era airline desks, replaced by 28 modern self-service kiosks and 15 automatic bag drops in a completely redesigned space. The technology allows different airlines to share the kiosks, bag drops and check-in areas, rather than have facilities set aside for one carrier, giving airlines greater flexibly as flight schedules and traveller demand change throughout the day.
While self-service technology is familiar at airports around the world, Auckland Airport is innovating further by moving towards a common use experience. This will make better use of the terminal space as the airport grows, while laying the digital foundations for further improvements to how travellers move through the airport.
“By using our space and technology more flexibly, we can give travellers a smoother, more intuitive start to their journey and give airlines more flexibility,” says Carrie.
“For anyone flying, it means more freedom to move through check-in at their own pace. Families, larger groups and people who don’t travel often, will have the more time and space to get organised without feeling rushed, and frequent flyers can get their trip underway quickly.
“We want the experience to feel easy and welcoming. Technology will make the process faster and more convenient, but help will always be close at hand, with airport and airline teams available to guide travellers through.”
By the end of the decade, people travelling on domestic jet services will check-in alongside international travellers, with shared check-in facilities supporting both in the integrated terminal.
Over the coming weeks, some airlines will complete technical onboarding, testing, training and operational trials before Zone C check-in area reopens to the public later this year.
When that opens, the next check-in area will go behind hoardings as further check-in desks are replaced with self-service technology. Until the transformation is fully complete, airlines will continue to use a mix of desk-based or self-service check-in areas, including the temporary Zone T pavilion alongside the Transport Hub.
The transformation continues
With the programme now more than halfway complete, the focus is increasingly shifting from building the new infrastructure to bringing it into operational use.
“Passing this halfway mark does not mean the hardest work is behind us,” says Carrie.
“What comes now is different. New facilities, infrastructure and operating systems need to be brought into use piece by piece, with each one connecting into an airport that continues to serve travellers and airlines every day.”
Work over the next few years includes a new front façade across the check-in hall, upgraded bathrooms and other amenities, new lifts and escalators, a new baggage handling system, and changes to departures security and passport checks.
During this time, construction will be more visible to travellers.
“For the first half of the programme, much of the work happened behind the scenes or on the new terminal site.
“Over the next few years, people will see more change every time they travel through the airport.
“There will be construction hoardings, changing routes and temporary arrangements while work is underway. We recognise that this will be frustrating at times, and our focus is on helping people know what to expect, keeping them moving and opening improvements in stages so the airport can continue operating while we build. It will absolutely be worth it.”
The programme of investment is estimated to support an estimated $4.5 billion annually in additional economic benefit from domestic and international tourism.
“Every part of the programme we complete brings us closer to delivering that value for New Zealand,” Carrie says.
