Rotorua’s Polynesian Spa has been named Best Geothermal Spa in Australasia in the LUXlife Leaders in Luxury Awards 2026, recognising its distinctive geothermal mineral waters, lakeside setting and commitment to authentic wellbeing experiences.
Set on the shores of Lake Rotorua at Sulphur Bay, Polynesian Spa is deeply connected to Rotorua’s long history of geothermal bathing. At the heart of the experience are two natural geothermal mineral springs, each with a different mineral composition.
The alkaline Rachel Spring is traditionally associated with softening and nourishing the skin, while the acidic Priest Spring, rich in sulphate minerals, has long been valued for soothing tired muscles and aches.
Today, these natural waters remain central to Polynesian Spa’s offering, alongside lake-view mineral bathing, private pools, spa therapies and a growing range of wellness experiences.
CEO Gert Taljaard says the recognition reflects much more than the natural assets of the site.
“Rotorua’s geothermal waters and our position on Sulphur Bay give us something incredibly special, but this award also recognises the people and care behind the experience. Our team works hard to create a place where both visitors and our local community can slow down, restore and reconnect.”
The award comes as traveller expectations around wellness continue to evolve, with increasing demand for experiences that provide a strong sense of place, authenticity and opportunities to genuinely switch off.
Polynesian Spa continues to balance its role as an internationally recognised Rotorua visitor experience with a strong connection to its local community through memberships, partnerships, sponsorships and community initiatives.
Gert says that connection remains an important part of the spa’s identity.

The LUXlife Leaders in Luxury Awards recognise businesses across the international luxury and hospitality sectors, with Polynesian Spa receiving the 2026 award for Best Geothermal Spa in Australasia.
