Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown has launched a campaign encouraging Aucklanders to identify small roading issues that could be fixed quickly, as Auckland Council prepares to take charge of the city’s roads October 1.
The Quick Fix programme is focused on delivering early wins by providing practical transport solutions to reduce congestion, improve traffic flow and make it easier for people to get around Auckland.
The initiative comes as Auckland Council looks to take back control of transport decision making from Auckland Transport, giving elected members direct oversight of Auckland’s roads and transport network.
Mayor Brown says Aucklanders regularly raise the same kinds of transport issues that create frustration every day.
“Aucklanders are sick of sitting in unnecessary traffic caused by problems that should have been fixed years ago,” says Mayor Brown.
“Every day I hear about traffic lights that don’t work properly, road layouts that cause delays, intersections that create bottlenecks and parked cars blocking traffic lanes.
“These aren’t billion-dollar projects. They’re common-sense fixes that can make a real difference to people’s daily lives, and can be delivered better, faster, cheaper.
“We want Aucklanders to tell us what transport issues might need a quick fix.”
These could include:
- Removing or changing on-street parking where it blocks traffic flow.
- Improving road layouts that create unnecessary congestion.
- Optimising traffic light timing to reduce delays.
- Fixing confusing road signs and road markings.
- Improving bus and high-occupancy vehicle movement through traffic bottlenecks.
- Upgrading intersections where turning traffic creates delays.
Mayor Brown says the campaign is about delivering fixes that improve the everyday experience for Aucklanders.
“Sometimes the biggest difference comes from fixing the small things.” he says.
“We want to get early wins on the board and show Aucklanders that practical improvements can happen quickly when we focus on solving the right problems.
“It means less waiting, less congestion and ultimately, a transport system that works for everyone.
Aucklanders can submit suggestions for transport issues they believe could be addressed through the Quick Fix programme.
The submissions will be assessed to determine whether they are suitable for inclusion and can be delivered as part of the programme.
“If you’ve spotted an everyday transport problem that’s slowing you down around the city or in your neighbourhood, we want to hear about it,” says Mayor Brown.
“Tell us where it is and what’s happening so we can get Auckland moving.”
