Development West Coast has launched a new investment platform designed to connect businesses with conservation, tourism and community projects across the region.
The Nature Economy Partnership aims to unlock private-sector funding for initiatives that enhance biodiversity, restore native habitats, improve recreation and tourism infrastructure, conserve heritage assets and support community wellbeing.
Tourism businesses are among the first organisations to join the initiative, with Scenic Hotel Group signing on as a platinum sponsor and Cycle Journeys becoming a silver sponsor.
Development West Coast chief executive Heath Milne says the partnership is intended to make it easier for businesses to invest in projects with measurable environmental, social and economic benefits.
“The goal is to make it easier for businesses to support nature-positive initiatives while helping build a stronger, more resilient West Coast economy,” Heath says.
Scenic Hotel Group will support the Ōkārito Plant Project and the West Coast Penguin Trust. Chief executive Karl Luxon says the sponsorship reflects the company’s commitment to regenerative tourism and protecting the natural environments that attract visitors to the region.
Cycle Journeys is backing the Wadeson Island Enhancement Project in Hokitika, where funding will contribute to wetland restoration, native habitat enhancement and the development of new recreational trails.
The Nature Economy Partnership provides project management, financial oversight and impact reporting, with sponsorship options available for businesses of varying sizes.
