Queenstown and Wānaka restaurants have claimed five MICHELIN stars in the inaugural MICHELIN Guide New Zealand, including the country’s only two-star restaurant.
Queenstown’s Essence received two MICHELIN stars, while Rātā, Sherwood and Amisfield each earned one star. Wānaka restaurant Kika also received one MICHELIN star.
Eight restaurants across the region were recognised with Bib Gourmand awards for high-quality, good-value dining. They include Wānaka’s Paloma Taqueria, Bombay Palace, Francesca and Muttonbird, and Queenstown’s Aosta, Sundays and The Cow.
A further 13 restaurants from Queenstown and Wānaka were included in the official MICHELIN Guide selection.
Destination Queenstown and Lake Wānaka Tourism chief executive Mat Woods says the results reinforce the region’s reputation as a food and wine destination.
“To see five restaurants receive MICHELIN Stars, including New Zealand’s only two-star restaurant, is an extraordinary achievement and one the entire region can celebrate.”
He says the recognition reflects the strength and diversity of the region’s hospitality offering and will help attract visitors seeking world-class dining experiences.
The inaugural MICHELIN Guide New Zealand recognised 110 establishments across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Queenstown, with 15 restaurants awarded MICHELIN stars.
