Interislander is encouraging Kiwis to rethink how they travel this winter, with new foot passenger fares from $50 making it easier to cross Cook Strait without a vehicle.
Available on selected sailings between Wellington and Picton, the limited-time offer aims to provide an affordable travel option as transport costs continue to rise.
Affordable travel option
KiwiRail general manager passenger Clare Morgan says the campaign responds to current cost pressures while supporting more flexible travel choices.
“Like other transport providers, we are seeing increased fuel and operating costs, which are reflected across our fares.
“Our winter campaign ensures there is still an accessible way for people to get across Cook Strait and travelling as a foot passenger is the most affordable option.”
Fares start from $50 for adults and $25 for children, allowing passengers to walk on and travel without the costs associated with taking a vehicle.
“For a lot of trips, you don’t need to take the car. You can walk on in Wellington or Picton, relax on board, and connect easily to transport options at the other end.
“It’s a simpler way to travel, and for many people, a much more cost-effective one.”
Winter events boost appeal
The campaign also highlights winter events and attractions in both regions.
WellingtonNZ chief executive Mark Oldershaw says the capital offers a strong winter programme.
“Winter is a fantastic time to visit Wellington, with a packed events calendar bringing the city to life, from the 12-day Lōemis Festival in June, through to the All Blacks versus Italy match and Royal New Zealand Ballet’s winter season in July, Visa Wellington On a Plate and Beervana in August, and the Star Wars: LEGO exhibition at Tākina throughout the season.”
Mark says visitors can also explore Wellington’s hospitality sector and new attractions, including Te Ara Tupua, the walking and cycling link between Wellington and the Hutt Valley.
Marlborough winter escape
Destination Marlborough general manager Tracey Green says winter offers a different perspective on the region.
“Winter is a very special time to visit Marlborough, with incredible food and wine experiences that are perfect for a seasonal escape.
“Visitors can spend their days exploring cellar doors, enjoying fireside dining, or getting out into the Marlborough Sounds for a truly unique winter experience.”
Tracey says the Marlborough Book Festival in July adds to the region’s winter appeal.
